Why should I pay attention to Global Climate Change ?

Weather is becoming more perilous. There are many more energetic hurricanes and tornadoes. The sea level is rising. In short—it’s getting dangerous. In addition, the external change is part of another change inside our species. You will not see it if you do not pay attention.

How will it affect me?

Do you know what an anvil cloud is? It’s the kind of cloud that causes tornadoes. On the more metaphysical side--a change is underway and our imact on the climate is merely an example. Or, did you know a moderate hurricane can tear your house down, ruin your business, kill your loved ones. Did you know 8% of the world’s income goes to insurance now and that number is not going down? People are already dead from global warming.

It sounds like you are just scaring me.

There is a good reason to be scared of rabid weather.. Our generation has had a nice ride here in the U.S.. Sorry but there is work to do. It’s going to be a bit unpleasant and there will be sacrifices. If we deal with it all sooner rather than later it will be easier. So yes fear is dangerous. In addition we have a major metamorphosis underway. Don't you want to see where we go? And that's the point--there is nothing to be afraid of except our own desire to shut our collective eyes and make belieeve nothing is occuring.

How serious is the problem?

On a scale of one to ten the event is a twelve.

How will reading "The GALILEO Syndrome" make a difference in my life?

It will help develop the political will. Without the political will our leaders will not take the necessary steps to protect the population because the population is not demanding protection from the threat of climate change. We the people have to demand the protection. Unless we demand proactive response none will occur. We are, in that case, forcing our children to be a generation of victims due to our lassitude. However, if we are aware our children make make a step foward rather than backwards.

What is the United States government doing to combat Global Warming?

Primarily, the United States government is trying to find systems to mitigate the consequences of severe weather events, provide economic incentives for reduction in carbon dioxide output, establish global goals for dealing with climate change, foster leading edge research into innovative energy production, fostering research into clean energy production, and do it in a social climate where large interests have just as much say as the people. Tough job--no matter how you slice it.

Is it a political issue or a scientific issue?

It is no longer a scientific debate. That is over. The predicament from the politicians standpoint is that addressing the problem will lead to inconvenience, dislocation, hardship, economic adversity, changes in economic leadership--to put it another way: a change in the fabric of industrial society. So for the politician, to promote that kind of change without political will is political suicide.

What good is the book then?

"The GALILEO Syndrome" is meant to develop the political will by increasing awareness of what the last gasp attempt would have to be to combat climate change. Climate change is not about desperation. It is about a change that is going on inside us and around us. We can either choose to face the change or not. Either way it will happen. In some ways it's like crossing a road. If we pay attention it is relatively safe. If we don't pay attention then we have a higher possibility of not getting across the roadway in one piece. Let's not plan to be roadkill.
